About the Item
Tony Scherman (1950-2023) is one of the most collected and distinctive Canadian artists. He is renowned internationally for his work in encaustic (a mix of wax and oil, one of the most difficult mediums to work in).
Scherman frequently alludes to the grandeur of past centuries, both in his subject matter and by his choice of painting with encaustic. The artist is continuing a tradition, of working with this material, that has been propelled through art history by a diverse number of canonical artists including Pieter Claesz, Caravaggio, and Cézanne.
Still lifes are one of Scherman's signature motifs. Peonies, in particular, are a recurring interest for the artist. While voluminous and intricate, the flower has a notoriously short blooming season of about seven days, making them both impressive and extremely ephemeral.
This luminous depiction of peonies serves as a fantastic example of Scherman's signature aesthetic and technique. Through his mastery of light, Scherman expertly depicts a bouquet of abundant peonies with incredible attention to their lush petals.
Displayed in a vase, the arrangement is illuminated by a single and direct light source that is further intensified by Scherman's signature midnight background, evocative of chiaroscuro.
Scherman’s work can be found in nearly every public collection in Canada, as well as many international museums including LACMA (Los Angeles) and Centre Pompidou (Paris)

By Charles Pachter
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have independently earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon.
The barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, forms a triad of icons that Charles Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career.
Playful and a touch irreverent, Pachter's charming imagery presents a new narrative on Canadiana. The artist’s vast body of work includes painting, sculpture, printmaking, and drawing. Pachter’s works are widely sought-after and are an ideal selection for starting or continuing a collection of 20th-century Canadian art.
Pachter's confident colors, sharp lines, and graphic qualities are instantly recognizable and continue to be a mainstay throughout his oeuvre.

Two Flies on a Bentwood Chair by Michael Hurson. Lithograph on white paper with silkscreen on plexiglass, in a cream-colored lacquer frame. Edition 70: this impression 56/70. Signed by the artist with initials and numbered 56/70 in pencil lower right. Prepackaged and framed: ready to ship immediately, and ready to hang out of the box.
This mixed-media lithograph with silkscreen portrays the colorful scene of a lush, sun-drenched front porch. Hurson's whimsical play on geometry and three-dimensionality is enhanced by the layers of plexiglass and paper upon which the image is printed. In the center of the composition, printed on the base layer of paper, a bright yellow sun sits atop a liquid, sky-blue background, and a jaunty, crayon-textured cloud. A porch door...
