Art Nouveau silver, ivory walking stick, signed Fernand Dubois, Belgium 1900.

About the Item

Art Nouveau walking stick. The silver knob depicts the face of a girl, made of carved ivory, with long hair wrapped along the ebony wood barrel. The girl's hairstyle features stones, garnets cabochon, along the band of the hat. Signed Dubois. Fernand Dubois (1861-1932) was a well-known Belgian engraver, sculptor and medalist, working in bronze, silver and ivory. Educated at the Free University of Brussels, he apprenticed to Belgian sculptor Charles van der Stappen in 1882, spending the next nine years perfecting his medal-engraving skills for which he became widely known. Through Van der Stappen, Dubois befriended the great Art Nouveau architect Victor Horta, who built Dubois house and studio on the outskirts of Brussels in 1903. Belgium circa 1900.
